Jennifer Hunt wins American Economic Journal Best Paper Prize

Professor Jennifer Hunt's paper, "How Much Does Immigration Boost Innovation?" with Marjolaine Gauthier-Loiselle wins the 2013 Best Paper Prize for the American Economic Journal: Macroeconomics. AEJ Macroeconomics ranks among the top ten economics journals according to the IDEAS/RePEc citation-based discounted impact factors.

Economics student wins Best Poster Contest

The Economics Department is proud to announce that economics major and Aresty Research Assistant Gurpal Sran has won the 2013 prize for Best Poster in the Social Sciences. Gurpal's work on the compensation of national bank examiners in the Federal Reserve System was advised by Professor Eugene White.

Jeff Rubin wins Warren R. Susman Award for Excellence in Teaching



altThe Department of Economics is proud to announce that Professor Jeffrey Rubin has won the Warren R. Susman Award for Excellence in Teaching. This honor is awarded annually to tenured faculty members in recognition of outstanding service in stimulating and guiding the intellectual development of students at Rutgers University. Professor Rubin's teaching and advising have made a difference in the lives of countless students at Rutgers.

Jennifer Hunt appointed Chief Economist for U.S. Labor Department

altJennifer Hunt has an exciting new role: Chief Economist of the U.S. Department of Labor. She will take on this new challenge while on leave from her position of Professor of Economics at Rutgers. Professor Hunt has done research in the areas of employment and unemployment policy, immigration, wage inequality, transition economics, crime and corruption. As Chief Economist, she will inform policies on job creation, job training and readiness, the minimum wage, immigration, unemployment insurance and retirement security. Read more

Michael Bordo named Board of Governors Professor

Professor Bordo, recipient of a Rutgers Board of Trustees Award for Excellence in Research, is widely recognized as one of the world’s leading monetary and financial historians. Important Information - Policies

Policy on Outside Courses

                A maximum of three approved classes taken outside RU-New Brunswick Economics Department can be counted towards the major.  It is advisable to have any outside course preapproved. See our policies on online and short courses.

Policy on Online Courses

                We do not accept courses as prerequisite equivalent when grades are not substantially based on proctored or identity-secure administration of a cumulative final exam (i.e. 50% or more of the final grade).

Policy on Courses from RU-Newark and RU-Camden

Students will no longer be able to use RU-Newark and RU-Camden courses in Intermediate Microeconomics, Intermediate Macroeconomics, and Econometrics towards the SAS Economics major.

Please note that this policy is notretroactive: students who have taken these courses in the Spring of 2011 or earlier semesters will be allowed to use them to fulfill SAS Economics major requirements.  Intro to Micro and Macro classes taken at RU_ Newark or RU_ Camden need to be preapproved. See our policy on Online Courses and Short Courses.

Special Permission

Due to overwhelming demand for our courses and constraints on room size, we are unable to grant special permission numbers for courses that are closed.
